2016: year of anniversaries in the literature language

While in 2016 the Spanish-speaking world celebrates the year of Cervantes, the English-speaking world celebrates the year of Shakespeare since it is 400 years of their death. Although both dates of death are said to be April 23rd (International Book Day), many people indicate that this is not so as there was actually a difference between the Spanish and the English calendar.

The important aspect is that both Spanish and English institutions from around the world plan to hold events and make institutional and publishing activities to celebrate it. In order to review the influence of both writers in the literary world Hay Festival, Acción Cultural Española and the British Council organize a project in which twelve contemporary writers write about these two writers. Real Academia Española, for its part, among other things, reedits the commemorative edition of Don Quixote commentated by Darío Villanueva, Mario Vargas Llosa and others. In Spain, the Executive Committee of the fourth Centenary of Cervantes’ death confirmed 59 projects including performing arts, publications, conferences, exhibitions, etc. In England, the Royal Shakespeare Company programmed special plays and expects to reopen the school where Shakespeare attended in Stratford-Upon-Avon and where his birth house is. In Argentina, Fundación Shakespeare Argentina (FSA), the city government and other institutions will be in charge of promoting the works of Shakespeare and Cervantes with allusive events.

It is also important to mention for literature lovers that this year is 30 years of Jorge Luis Borges’ death, the Argentine writer. His widow, María Kodama, foretold that homages will be paid in Argentina and in other capitals of the world.
