Official certified translation of university degrees and academic transcripts
Do you need to submit your university degrees or transcripts abroad? What steps should I follow to submit an Argentine university degree or transcript to a university abroad?
We always recommend checking the university's requirements (as they may vary), although we will detail the most common steps below. It is usually recommended not to part with the original documents, so you can choose to make a certified copy of the original by a notary public after legalisation by the Ministry of the Interior.
To summarise, the usual steps for the official translation of university degrees and transcripts are as follows:
- Certify the original document at the Legalization Department of the corresponding university.
- (Only for university degrees issued before 2012 or secondary or tertiary degrees issued before 2010) certify the original document at the Ministry of the Internal Affairs. To do so, you must request an appointment through the Ministry's website. (link).
- Photocopy the original document so that it is completely legible.
- Make a completely clear and legible photocopy of the original document.
- Certify the signature of the Notary Public at the Notaries Public Association.
- Apostille the original document at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship. The procedure is done through the website called "Tramites a Distancia". (link).
- Hire a Sworn Translator registered in the Sworn Translators Association (Colegio de Traductores Públicos) to translate the certified and apostilled copy. NSC Idiomas is in charge of translating, cetifying and advising clients for this purpose.
- Legalize the certified translation at the Sworn Translators Association and pay the corresponding legalization fee. The legalization can be perfomed by a handwritten or digital signature. In the Association's website you will find all the information (link) or you can consult your doubts by e-mail, telephone to 1539450205 or by Wharsapp.
- In many cases, the legalized public translation is also apostilled.
What if the document comes from abroad and I need to submit a certified translation of my university degrees and transcripts to an Argentine university?
If the document was issued abroad and you need to submit it to an Argentine university or educational institution, it is essential that it has the Hague Apostille or, failing that, the corresponding consular legalization. The Apostille certifies the authenticity of the signature and seal of the original document, and allows it to be officially recognized in Argentina and in all countries that are part of the Hague Convention.
Once apostilled or legalized, the document can be translated by a certified translator in Argentina. Subsequently, the translation must be legalized before the Sworn Translators' Association to be valid before university authorities, ministries, or official bodies. In this way, your certified translation of university degrees and transcripts is ready for submission.
What happens if the certified translation of university degrees and transcripts must be submitted in a country that is not part of the Hague Convention?
If the country where you intend to present your university degree or transcript is not a member of the Hague Convention, the document must undergo a consular legalization process. This means that, instead of the Apostille, the document must be legalized first by the Ministry of the Interior or the Ministry of Education, as appropriate, and then by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Worship of the Argentine Republic. In this case, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs applies a "verified" (habilitado) seal. When in doubt, you may also choose to consult the corresponding embassy or consulate.
